Bun-gee

Pentecost Island Vanuatu

I once had to stay in Vanuatu.

We were working on an international gambling thing and the client stayed close to his computer servers - which meant the virtually tax free nation of Vanuatu. On the first day of operation an earthquake wiped out the server, on my first day there another almost knocked a scented marker pen out of my hand - though I plowed on through.

I have no idea why Vanuatu comes to mind today but this picture - of a Vanuatu tradition - think bungee using vines rather than elastic and sudden, hip dislocating stops as the 'rope' runs out felt rather apt to my mood.

Just watched Cyndi Lauper live in HD on a Sunday morning and realise that middle age is absolutely upon me - was 'Time After Time' really a quarter of a decade ago?

hi steve

this week is the twenty fifth anniversary of the invention of bungee jumping. the two kiwi originators of the dangerous sports club jumped off of clifton suspension bridge and were rewarded with a night in the stoney lonesome.

almost all coverage of this event has included the addendum that they were copying the longstanding rite de passage of vine jumping from vanuatu.

it may well be that you have picked up a passive sleeper comment especially if you are the sort who has R4 or NPR on in the back ground. or it might have been a side box comment in a newspaper.

as you will know the ad industry tried such passive sleepers in the cinema in the 60s and found it worked so well the FBI stepped in and stopped them I think, so they could use them more fully in the cold war. ergo the manchurian candidate - the cool, banned one with sinatra in. now the cold war is over perhaps the ad biz should re-visit it. you the man.

yes cindy lauper was that long ago, and ps she weren't all that young then either. the only person ever to improve on a roy orbison song.

gotta go eat pasta
